Another employee has tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID 19) at Newport News Shipbuilding.
So far the company has 10 confirmed cases with six cases confirmed in the past week.
The employee worked at Building 902-2, Off-Yard Office, 2700 Huntington Ave., and was last on company property on March 24, according to the shipyard’s website.
It’s unclear if the individual self-reported and if they are currently quarantined.
Jennifer Boykin, president of Newport News Shipbuilding, said Friday in a Facebook post she would share a weekly update summarizing company actions, confirmed cases and other information about possible changes.
“I want to provide timely, helpful information as we continue to navigate this ever-changing situation together,” she wrote in a letter. “As we look to the week ahead, we are actively assessing shift adjustments, temperature taking technology and changes to high traffic touch points. I remain committed to communicating with you as decisions are made.”
There are now a total of six cases in the Off Yard Offices, three in the Mid-Yard and one case on the USS George Washington CVN 72. There are no cases reported in the North Yard, South Yard or on the John F. Kennedy CVN 79 at this time.
As of Friday, James City County has 104 cases, Newport News has 37, Hampton has 29, York County has 17, Williamsburg has 9 and Poquoson has 3, according to the Virginia Department of Health’s website.
There are 2,012 positive cases and 46 deaths statewide. At least eight people from the Peninsula Health District have died from the coronavirus.
The Peninsula Health District covers Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County and York County. The Hampton Health District covers Hampton.
