Sentara CarePlex Hospital in Hampton has been named one of the top 250 hospitals in the nation, according to Healthgrades’ “America’s Best Hospitals 2020” list.

Formerly known as the “Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence,” hospitals in the top 250 are among the top 5 percent in the nation for overall clinical excellence this year, according to the website.

“Our team works tirelessly to provide outstanding care to our community and it’s a true honor to be recognized as one of the best in the country for the second consecutive time,” said Kapua Conley, president of Sentara CarePlex Hospital.

Healthgrades analyzed and ranked about 4,500 hospitals across the country based on criteria, including hospital performance, clinical outcomes, patient safety, and patient experience. According to the data, patients are at lower risk of dying from heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and sepsis when they are treated at the facilities on the “Best of” list.

“Simply put, patients are more likely to have a successful treatment without major complications—and have a lower chance of dying—at America’s best hospitals,” the site reads.

Sentara Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach and Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk were also included among the 13 facilities in the state to make the list.

Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk ranked in the top 100, or the top 2 percent of hospitals in the U.S. this year.
