Police: Body found Sunday was that of missing Newport News man

Newport News Police have identified the body found in the water on Sunday as that of Leon Francis, a 62-year-old Newport News man who had been missing for nearly a month.

On Feb. 16 police responded to the 200 block of Rivers Ridge Circle at approximately 3:02 p.m. in reference to a body in the water and, according to the news release.

Police said it appeared the body had been in the water “for some length in time.”

Francis was last seen on Jan. 14 at his home in the 400 block of Wynn Drive around 6:10 a.m., authorities said.

His family said in a Facebook post following his disappearance that Francis had Parkinson’s Disease and had difficulty walking with limited motor skills.

A cause of death has yet to be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
