Presidents Day is Monday. Here’s what’s closed

Monday is Presidents Day or the day in between George Washington’s and Abraham Lincoln’s birthdays but on which the nation celebrates all past and present U.S. presidents.

WYDaily has compiled a list of city offices, community organizations, and businesses that are closed to observe the federal holiday.

The following entities are closed on Monday, Feb. 17 unless otherwise noted:


  • All city offices
  • Municipal building
  • Quarterpath Recreation Center
  • Williamsburg-James City County Courthouse

All city parks will remain open. Waller Mill Park is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Williamsburg Regional Library is open and trash is being collected on Monday as scheduled.

James City County

  • All County offices
  • Chickahominy Riverfront Park store and office
  • James City County Marina store and office
  • Little Creek Reservoir Park store and office
  • Williamsburg-James City County Courthouse

All county parks will remain open. Freedom Park sore and office is open. Convenience centers and garbage transfer stations will operate on normal hours. There will be no change to curbside recycling. Both the James City County Recreation Center and Abram Frink Jr. Community Center will remain open for normal hours.

York County

  • County offices
  • York County Courthouse
  • York-Poquoson Social Services
  • York County Libraries
  • Waste Management Center administrative offices

Virginia Cooperative Extension will remain open. The Waste Management Center, VPPSA Composting Facility and Transfer Station will remain open. Garbage and recycling collection will follow regular schedules.

  • City schools
  • Monday’s recycling, refuse, bulk or yard waste collection will move to Wednesday, Feb. 19
  • Yard Waste Site
  • Monday street sweeping will move to Wednesday, Feb. 19
  • City libraries
  • City courts
  • Health Department
  • Social Services
  • City park administration offices
  • Hampton Clean City Commission
  • City Community Centers including Air Power Park
  • Treasurer’s Office & Commissioner of Revenue’s Office
  • Charles H. Taylor Visual Arts Center
  • Hampton History Museum administrative offices

The City’s landfill will remain open as well as all City parks and golf courses. Hampton History Museum galleries and visitor’s center is open.

Newport News

  • City offices
  • City libraries
  • Garbage, recycling and bulk waste collections – All collections for the week will be delayed one day, i.e., Monday’s collections will take place on Tuesday.
  • Recovery Operations Center (i.e., landfill)
  • Waterworks — Payments can be made online or by phone, 757-926-1000. Customers experiencing emergency water outages should call 757-234-4800. 

Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter is open for adoptions noon to 5 p.m. Monday.
