Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center data now in NorfolkOpenData

NORFOLK, Va – The Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center enjoyed a remarkable year in 2019, with increases in adoptions, transfers and foster placements, as well as a decrease in the number of animals euthanized.

The center hired additional staff, expanded adoption hours, established new partnerships, hosted dozens of community events, and won grants to expand programs and purchase a mobile adoption unit, according to a press release.

A new open-admission shelter is available on Norfolk’s open data portal, NorfolkOpenData. This data includes animal types and gender; age, breed and color; intake and outcome dates and types; and animal status. NACC has long reported its monthly statistics on its Norfolk.gov webpage. Now five years of this data is available to sort, filter and analyze.

Two data stories accompany this dataset. The first showcases the mission of NACC and the hard work and dedication of NACC’s staff and volunteers. The second features a personal story that serves as an example of how a resident might use this data to look up their own adopted furry family member.

“We are proud to offer this data to our residents, and we are even prouder of the staff at NACC for their incredible efforts in the last year,” said city General Services Director Nikki Riddick. “This year we will continue to provide excellent care and support for all the adoptable animals in our city. Watch for even more community events, emphasis on fostering programs for medium and large dogs, enrichment programs for the animals in our shelter, and our mobile adoption unit!”

This dataset joins data on public safety, flooding, neighborhoods, code enforcement, economic development and parks and recreation on NorfolkOpenData. Feel free to view, download and manipulate this data. We provide this data as an affirmation of our commitment to transparency and community collaboration. We hope that you will use this data to improve your community, spark a business idea or just satisfy your curiosity. Data will be updated and expanded often as we work to build a comprehensive open data portal.
