The Newport Police Department and the New Beech Grove Baptist Church are hosting two awareness and safety events about human trafficking.

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month and both session are free and open to the public.

“Every year, millions of men, women and children are trafficked worldwide, including right here in the United States. It can happen in any community and victims can be any age, race, gender, or nationality and be from any socio-economic background,” according to the city’s news release. “Traffickers might use violence, manipulation, or false promises of well-paying jobs or romantic relationships to lure victims into trafficking situations.“

The first session is at the Newport News Police Department Headquarters, 9710 Jefferson Ave., on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The second is at the New Beech Grove Baptist Church, 361 Beechmont Drive, on Jan. 28 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Each session lasts about two hours — registration is not required for either session.
