Ford’s Colony fire kills one, sends another to hospital

Authorities are investigating a Wednesday morning fire at Ford’s Colony that killed the homeowner.

He was identified as Thomas M. Collier Jr., 72.

James City County Fire officials said the fire marshal’s office “determined that the fire was caused by smoking materials.”

They did not elaborate. The fire was mostly on the second floor of the home.

James City County Fire crews responded to the fire at 7:09 a.m. in the 100 block of Worplesdon in the Ford’s Colony subdivision.

The blaze was under control at 7:36 a.m., according to a news release from James City County.

Fire officials said Collier died while another resident was taken to the hospital with “breathing issue.”
