New Year’s Eve, and Day, can be a time for camaraderie and drinking.
Sometimes, people take Ubers to avoid driving home. Others risk it and end up with a DUI on their driving record.
WYDaily asked the local law enforcement departments on the Peninsula for the number of people arrested for DUIs on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
The statistics below are from the Williamsburg, James City County, Hampton and Newport News Police Departments as well as the York-Poquoson’s Sheriff’s Office.
This year, the Hampton and Williamsburg Police departments had zero DUI arrests on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
The Newport News Police Department had the most arrests, an increase of one DUI arrest compared to last year, followed by James City County and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office.
Last year, the James City County Police Department was the only department to have zero arrests. See the chart below.
For the second year in a row, the Newport News Police Department had the most DUI arrests out of the localities.
In addition, Williamsburg, Hampton and York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office were tied for one DUI on both days.
On New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in 2017-2018, the Newport News Police Department, the Williamsburg Police Department and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office all had zero DUI arrests.
The Hampton Police Department had the most DUI arrests at that time, followed by the James City County Police Department.
