Newport News Police investigate fatal officer-involved shooting

The investigation into an officer-involved shooting resulting in the death of a man in Newport News continues.

Police said the incident happened at around 8:15 p.m. Friday when officers were sent to “the 100 block of Nantucket Place in reference to an individual making multiple false 911 calls.”

There, officers talked with a man described as in his mid- to late-30s about making those 911 calls. Police attempted to place the man under arrest but he refused to cooperate “and darted back inside the residence,” according to a news release from the Newport News Police Department.

Officers entered the home and again tried to arrest the man, who police said continued to resist.

There was a struggle and at some point an officer deployed a stun gun.

Authorities said the man got a hold of the stun gun “and began tasing the officers.”

“An officer then deployed a service weapon, striking the male,” police wrote in a news release. “Officers immediately began rendering aid to the male, but they were unable to revive him. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Further information was not immediately released pending the result of the investigation.
