The Williamsburg Drug Company has been a staple in the area for 125 years, and now a new location will make them even more accessible.

The new location at 1310 Jamestown Road offers a “beautiful new look” and new services, said Lisa Genakos, marketing and community outreach coordinator for the company. Previously, the company had a location on Mt. Vernon Avenue but had to shut it down after new regulations for compounding labs came out.

Williamsburg Drug Company is the only compounding lab between Richmond and Chesapeake, Genakos said. The lab provides medications that aren’t commonly carried through national manufacturers, such as specific dosages or medications for pets.

However, the new regulations meant there needed to be more space for the lab and there wasn’t any room at the Mt. Vernon location to expand.

The new location on Jamestown Road has a new design that allows customers to view medications being made in the lab from the pharmacy floor through a glass wall.

The design of the new location is German, with fixtures shipped from Germany and a design focused on “wellness.”

There will also be a drive-up window so customers can pick up their prescriptions conveniently.

The Williamsburg Drug Company, now owned by TW Taylor, has been serving locals since it first opened in 1895. Now, at nearly 125 years old with multiple locations in the area, Genakos said the company is proud to continue growing and serving the community.

“When you’ve been operating continuously for 125 years, that really says something about your business,” she said.

She said part of what makes the company so successful is the dedication to the guests. In the pharmacy, there is a low turnover rate so customers and pharmacists can really get to know each other, which personalizes the experience.

“One of the biggest differences is that when you go to a chain drugstore, all the decisions are made by a corporation somewhere else,” she said. “When you come to a pharmacy like ours, all the decisions are made by the owner who is also local.”

Genakos said The Williamsburg Drug Company is also unique because it is one of the largest sellers of CBD oil in Virginia.

The new location is currently open but there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony in early February.
