The Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee is looking for a couple of residents who are passionate about improving walkability, or “bikeability,” in Hampton.
City officials recently said residents should submit an online application by Nov. 29 to be considered for one of the two open volunteer positions on the seven-member committee.
“We want people who can share their own point of view from whatever their experience is,” said Robin McCormick, a spokeswoman for the city of Hampton. “It could be using city trails for exercise, biking to school, getting to a bus stop, getting between parks and attractions — anything really.”
The staff-appointed committee serves to advise city officials on ways to improve the pedestrian transportation network in the city but also plans activities to encourage temporarily forgoing automobile transportation and events for National Bike Month in May, McCormick said.
The chosen candidates are expected to meet at City Hall every third Tuesday at 6 p.m. and be active in implementing the Bike Walk Hampton Plan.
Developed by the Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee and adopted by Hampton City Council in 2016, the Bike Walk Hampton Plan aims to link community resources like Buckroe Beach and Coliseum by alternative transportation options.
“The city is serious about making it easier and more convenient for people to bike and walk whether that’s for transportation or exercise,” McCormick said.
