Here’s what’s closed for Thanksgiving

Before heading out the door to run some errands over Thanksgiving break, make sure you know what’s open.

Thanksgiving is on Thursday, Nov. 28. so WYDaily compiled a list of localities on the Peninsula including James City County, York County, Williamsburg, Hampton and Newport News, whose offices are closed on the annual holiday.

The following offices, parks and other establishments are closed on Thanksgiving unless otherwise noted.

James City County

  • County offices, closed Thursday and Friday
  • County parks, open
  • Freedom Park Store and Office, closed Thursday
  • James City County Recreation Center, closed Thursday
  • Abram Frink Jr. Community Center, closed Thursday
  • Chickahominy Riverfront Park Store and Office, closed Thursday and Friday
  • James City County Marina Store and Office, closed Thursday and Friday
  • Little Creek Reservoir Park Store and Office, closed Thursday and Friday
  • County convenience centers, closed Thursday
  • Garbage Transfer Station, closed Thursday
  • Williamsburg Regional Library, closed 5 p.m. on Wednesday, closed all day Thursday and Friday
  • Williamsburg-James City County Courthouse, closed noon Wednesday, closed all day Thursday and Friday

On Thursday and Friday, curbside recycling will be delayed by one day.

Williamsburg

  • City offices, closed Thursday and Friday
  • Waller Mill Park, closed Thursday
  • Quarterpath Recreation Center, closed 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, closed Thursday and Friday

There will be no changes to trash or recycling schedule.

York County

  • York County public libraries, closed 5 p.m. Wednesday, closed Thursday and Friday
  • York County Courts, closed noon Wednesday, closed Thursday and Friday
  • Virginia Cooperative Extension, closed noon Wednesday, closed Thursday and Friday
  • County offices, closed Thursday and Friday
  • York-Poquoson Social Services, closed Thursday and Friday
  • Waste Management Center Administration, closed Thursday and Friday

Hampton

  • City offices — Nov. 28-29
  • City schools — Nov. 27-29
  • Garbage collection — No recycling, refuse, bulk trash, or yard waste collection on Nov. 28 and 29. Thursday collection will be made Wednesday, Nov. 27. Friday collection will be made Monday, Dec. 2, and Monday collection will be made Wednesday, Dec. 4
  • Landfill — Nov. 28
  • Yard Waste Site — Nov. 28-29
  • Libraries — Nov. 28-29
  • Courts — Closed Wednesday afternoon through Nov. 29.
  • Social Services — Nov. 28-29
  • Health Department/Clinics — Closed Wednesday afternoon through Nov. 29.
  • Golf Courses — Closes at 1 p.m. on Nov. 28
  • Bluebird Gap Farm — Nov. 28
  • History Museum — Nov. 28
  • Community Centers — Nov. 28-29
  • Hampton Carousel — Nov. 28
  • Air Power Museum Park — Nov. 28-29
  • Charles H. Taylor Arts Center — Nov. 28-29

Neighborhood parks and Sandy Bottom Nature are open for the holiday.

Newport News

  • City Offices – Nov. 28-29
  • Libraries – Nov. 28-29
  • Garbage, recycling and bulk waste collections – No collections on Nov. 28. Thursday’s collections will take place on Monday, Dec. 2 and all regularly scheduled collections for the week of Dec. 2 will be delayed one day.
  • Recovery Operations Center (i.e., landfill) – Nov. 28-30
  • Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter – Nov. 28
  • The Virginia Living Museum- Nov. 28
  • The Mariner’s Museum and Park- Nov. 28
  • The Peninsula Fine Arts Center- Nov. 28
