Two cities on the Peninsula have vacant seats on the school board.

The Hampton and Newport News school boards are looking for interim members to fill two vacancies because of the results of the Nov. 5 elections — both Martha Mugler and Shelly Simonds were elected to the Virginia House of Delegates.

Hampton

Mugler was elected to the Virginia General Assembly as a state delegate leaving her seat on the board open for an interim member beginning Feb. 5.

“All interested applicants must submit a letter of intent, application, and resume to Carolyn Bowers, clerk of the Hampton School Board, to be received by the close of the business day on Nov. 25, 2019,” officials said in a news release.

To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old, an eligible voter, and a resident of Hampton “residing within the political boundary of the Hampton voting district,” officials said.

The chosen candidate will fill the seat for the remainder of Mugler’s term ending Jun. 30 and be required to sign a statement saying they are not a candidate nor will they seek election for the vacant seat in the upcoming May election.

The Hampton School Board  will have a public hearing on Dec. 18 and expected to announce their decision by Jan. 15, officials said.

Residents can pick up a hard copy of the application from the Clerk of the School Board at 1 Franklin St. or find it online by clicking here and submit it to cbowers@hampton.k12.va.us.

Newport News

“The Newport News School Board appointment will fill the unexpired term of Shelly Simonds, which ends June 20, 2020,” according to a news release from Michelle Price, spokeswoman for Newport News Public Schools. “Simonds, who has served on the School Board since 2012, was elected to Virginia’s House of Delegates on November 5.”

Those who wish to apply for the position must be an eligible voter and live in the Central District of the city. Applicants are also subject to a background check. View the application here.

The salary is $15,000 per year but since this position is less than a year, it will be a pro-rated amount, Price said.

Residents interested in applying can fill out the application form online or pick up an application from the School Administration Building, 12465 Warwick Blvd.

Applications must be received by 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6.
