NEWPORT NEWS — The city’s Animal Control is looking for a man who was caught on surveillance camera with a small black pitbull puppy just hours before the dog was found dead outside the city animal shelter.

On Wednesday at approximately 5:15 a.m. a man was seen on security footage walking toward the Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter, 5843 Jefferson Ave., with the puppy, according to the city’s news release.

The man went off the surveillance footage for a couple of seconds reappearing without the puppy before he turned to walk on Jefferson Avenue.

The black puppy reappeared on the camera running toward the man before turning around and going the other way, according to the news release.

At approximately 8:15 a.m. the puppy was found dead near the animal shelter.

“It had inquiries consistent with being hit by a vehicle,” said Wayne Gilbert, superintendent of animal services for the city. “We believe it is a pitbull.”

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident or know the identity and whereabouts of the man to call the Crime Line at 888-562-5887.
