York County will see the familiar face of J.D. Danny Diggs as sheriff for his sixth consecutive term after Tuesday’s election.
Diggs has been York-Poquoson sheriff since he was elected in 1999 and had previously ran unopposed. This year, Diggs (15,573 or 75.26 percent) beat Scott Williams (5,070 or 24.5 percent), according to unofficial reports fro the Virginia Department of Elections.
Write-in votes totaled 49 or .24 percent.

Diggs, who was born and raised in Poquoson, has been in law enforcement since 1976, when he started as a dispatcher for the Poquoson Police at the age of 19. In 1977, he joined the York County Sheriff’s Office as a corrections officer and eventually served as a uniform patrol officer and investigator.
Diggs holds a degree in Police Science and graduated from the FBI National Academy in addition to earning degrees from various other local, state and federal law enforcement training programs.
He is a member of the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association, the National Sheriffs’ Association, the FBI National Academy Associates, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He is also an Endowment Member of the NRA.
Under Diggs’ leadership, YPSO was first accredited in 2003 and re-accredited in 2007, 2011, and 2015.
