First Coastal Cider Fest comes to Hampton

HAMPTON — Sly Clyde Ciderworks is hosting the first ever Coastal Cider Festival celebrating Virginia cideries from across the state. The celebration takes place during Virginia Cider Week in November.

Tickets are $38 and includes a tasting glass and unlimited 3-ounce tastes.

“People in the Hampton Roads area love cider, particular local cider,” said Doug Smith, co-owner of Sly Clyde’s. “We’ve launched 26 ciders this past year.”

The Phoebus based cidery opened in August 2018 and has released various ciders, had cider appreciation classes and even hosted a coastal cleanup.

Smith said they wanted to create an annual festival to celebrate cider and feels this new festival will expose people to the craft cider community in Virginia and expand their horizons.

“We’re all friends and this is a great opportunity to lift Virginia ciders up,” he added. “It’s going to be fun.”

Multiple cideries will be in attendance, including Sly Clyde Ciderworks’ own brews and Farm House by Back Bay in Virginia Beach.

The event will also have a “makers fair” featuring local craft vendors as well as food trucks and live music.

“This is a first for Hampton Roads and we’re really excited to be exposing Virginia best craft cidery makers from around the state,” Smith said.

The Coastal VA Cider Fest, 207 East Mellen St., is on Saturday, Nov. 23 from noon to 6 p.m.
