NORFOLK — Musicians, audio producers, voiceover actors, rejoice.
An audio production studio is opening this fall and all those vying for studio time have to do is show their library card.
The Sound Studio is the newest addition to Slover Library’s “Creative Studios” and while it doesn’t open until November, audio production enthusiasts who attended the Music Theory Studio Beat Clinic recently got a sneak peek into the space.
The new studio has two sound booths, one for voiceover work and vocal recording, and a larger space for collaborative work and recording with live instruments, said Martha Han, a spokeswoman for Slover Library.
“Patrons can work on projects such as creating original music, recording podcasts, or producing tracks for film and television,” she said.
Norfolk Public Library cardholders will have free access to various recording software programs including industry standard, Logic Pro X, and instruments like USB keyboards, guitars, synthesizers, and an electronic drum kit.
Before they get their hands on the equipment, those who intend to use the studio space are required to sign up for and accomplish orientation.
Library staff have already been in the studio recording audiobook readings for the Braille and Audio Reading Download project and the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled initiative to provide access to special-format books, magazines, and music scores in an online collection.
Volunteers can apply to become a Slover Library team member and record audiobooks for the project once The Sound Studio is approved to join the network of libraries, Han said.
Slover Library’s Creative Studios houses resources for digital art, photography, video production, and more in its Design, Maker, Production, and now, Sound Studios — the “dynamic community center is for artists, designers, craftspeople, and makers of all kinds,” the website reads.
“With state-of-the-art equipment and the help of knowledgeable staff and volunteers, the Sound Studio will encourage the growth and creativity of its patrons and continue Slover Library’s mission of community learning, leading-edge technology, and civic engagement,” Han said.
