Dominion Energy has incentivized energy-efficiency for residents with its new refrigerator recycling program.
By calling, or scheduling an appointment on the website, residents can get paid $20 when someone from Recleim, the contracted appliance recycling company, removes an old but working, refrigerator or freezer from their home.
And, it saves the customer money on their energy bill.
Bonita Harris, a spokeswoman for Dominion Energy, said some customers don’t realize how much energy older appliances require to run compared to newer models.
“They can use up to three times the energy and increase bills by up to $150 a year,” she said.
According to a news release from Dominion Energy, “Recleim captures 95 percent of the materials for reuse into products like laptops, cell phones, concrete mix, and soda cans.”
Dominion Energy has a number of ongoing energy-efficiency initiatives including its biggest outdoor lighting transition in 100 years as the company exchanges outdoor light bulbs for the more cost-effective LED bulbs.
Other programs like “100 Homes for 100 Vets” and “EnergyShare” help eligible customers save money by providing energy-saving upgrades and improvements, Harris said.
Harris also said more residential and non-residential programs are in the works for this fall.
“In addition to the home energy assessments and rebates on energy-efficient appliances, these programs will include energy-efficient lighting rebates and installation of energy-saving measures,” she said.
