VIRGINIA BEACH — Those who preordered a new Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center license plate earlier this year now have a tentative date when they’ll receive the final product.

Officials at the aquarium recently announced they’ve received and approved a final proof from the DMV and the plate is “headed for production” with release into DMV locations estimated for late fall, said Matthew Klepeisz, a spokesman for the aquarium.

Based on information from the DMV, Klepeisz said they anticipate residents who preordered a license plate would have them by Nov. 22.

The organization’s goal is to raise funds from license plate sales to help support their conservation and research programs, including their statewide marine animal Stranding Response Program, Klepeisz said.

The Virginia Aquarium announced their initiative to garner the 450 preorders required for Virginia General Assembly approval in 2018 — they received 600 preorders.

The aquarium is no longer taking applications for license plate orders but, Klepeisz said, they’ll be sure to let the everyone know when they’re available to the public for purchase.

“Once the plate is available statewide at DMVs and online, we will put up the web page again to encourage people to continue purchasing,” he said.
