VIRGINIA BEACH — VDOT is beginning construction on the Laskin Road (Route 58) Bridge Replacement & Widening Project here.

Contractor Allan Myers received notice to proceed with construction activities, including placement of signs and utility work, on Sept. 3. Motorists will begin seeing traffic signs near the project limits: Red Robin Road on the eastern end and Republic Road on the western end, VDOT officials said.

The contractor is expected to concentrate early project activities on and near the Linkhorn Bay Bridge before moving west towards the Hilltop Shopping Center.

The $83.2 million construction contract was awarded to Allan Myers in May. Construction is expected to be complete by spring 2023, officials said.

The project is designed to improve safety and traffic capacity by removing feeder lanes, which route traffic parallel to the main lanes of Laskin Road and provide access to businesses within the project limits, officials said in a news release.

The project will widen the current road from four lanes to eight lanes at its widest portion. It includes improvements to the Laskin Road/First Colonial Road intersection through construction of a 6-lane divided highway on First Colonial Road from Laurel Lane to Interstate 264.

The project will also provide storm water drainage and utility improvements.
