VDOT is prepared in Hampton Roads for potential Hurricane Dorian impacts

As Hurricane Dorian approaches Hampton Roads, VDOT stands ready to respond to any unsafe traveling conditions or storm damage, officials said in a news release.

Ahead of the storm, crews have been clearing drainage facilities, preparing trucks and equipment and coordinating for additional debris and tree removal crews to be on standby.

Please note the following highlights

• VDOT is conducting tide gate testing at the I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4.
  • Motorists traveling I-64 to the HRBT during this time should expect to be stopped for up to one hour in each direction. To avoid delays, motorists are encouraged to use the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel as an alternate route.
  • Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, Wednesday, Sept. 4
    • 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. – all eastbound traffic stopped
    • 3 a.m. to 4 a.m. – all westbound traffic stopped
• There are no plans to close any of Hampton Roads major bridge or tunnel crossings, including the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel. Complete bridge information can be found here.
• Motorists traveling I-64 westbound should expect to see slower speeds and stoppages for up to 10 minutes while crews remove a damaged sign support structure. The double right lane closure will begin east of the Greenbrier Parkway (exit 289) and extend to Indian River Road (exit 286). Work is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, Sept. 3.
• All other construction activities are dependent on weather and are subject to cancellation.
