NORFOLK — Coelacanth Brewing is expanding its sales to the European market, using an international provider in the Netherlands, USA Beer.

Coelacanth Brewing will join area brewer Virginia Beer Company on the list of Virginia Brewers USA Beer works with, said owner Kevin Erskine.

USA Beer works with other countries in Europe and distributes beer from other American Breweries including the following Virginia breweries: Lickinghole Creek, Hardywood Park, Triple Crossing, and the Virginia Beer Company.

USA Beer was drawn to two of Coelacanth Brewing’s specialty brews: Coelia Rosemary Lemon Ale and Passion Fruit Gose, Erskine said.

“This is reinforcement that Coelacanth is quietly turning out some of the best beer in Virginia,” he said. “I jokingly tell people we are the best brewery you’ve never heard of.”

“USA Beer Import aims to bring the best American craft beers to Europe,” USA Beer Managing Director Corné Luyken said.

The brewery is still in the process of gathering the necessary paperwork for the beer to move to the Netherlands Market but they expect to ship out the first pallet late August, Erskine said.

“The company will start selling in the Netherlands and then if it sells well, they’ll send more to their partner countries,” he added.

Some of those partner countries are Spain and France.

Coelacanth will send about a 100 cases the first time around but may send more depending on how well the beer does in that market.

“Europeans like American beers, its like a specialty buy for them,” he said.
