NEWPORT NEWS — The city’s annual IMPACT day with free backpacks and school supplies for children is happening Saturday.

Free school supplies are limited and distributed on a first come, first serve basis.

According to the city’s news release, the event features free backpacks and school supplies as well as games, food and free books from the South Morrison Library. In addition, community partners will have booths available to hand out information.

“Since the event’s inception in 2013, over 2,700 backpacks with school supplies have been distributed to students throughout the community,” according to the news release.

All of the items at the event are donated and organizers are still accepting donations, Kim Lee, spokeswoman for the city, wrote in an email.

The IMPACT Free Backpack and School Supply Giveaway & Community Day event is at the South Morrison Family Education Center, 746 Adams Drive from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children attending must be accompanied by adults.

Those who wish to donate items can drop off school supplies at the center. For more information, call 757-369-6907.
