It all started with a woman’s homicide: Officer, civilian shot. Police returned fire and shot suspect

NEWPORT NEWS — Police here are continuing to investigate a quadruple shooting that left a woman dead and three others injured, including a police officer.

One of the injured is the suspect in the woman’s killing, police said.

The identities of the four were not immediately released

It all began Saturday afternoon when officers responded to a Circle K convenience store in 100 block of Ottis Street on reports of a shooting. There, they found a woman in a car suffering from gunshot wounds – she was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Authorities identified a suspect in that shooting and found his vehicle two hours later in the Cottage Grove Apartment complex, Police Chief Steve Drew said in a news conference.

A perimeter was set up, the suspect came out from behind that “perimeter” and began shooting at police, Drew said.

An officer and a “civilian” were hit by gunfire; officers returned fire and hit the suspect, Drew said.

The officer, civilian and suspect were taken to a hospital. Drew said the officer is expected of be OK.

Information on the conditions of the civilian and the suspect was not immediately known.
