The Virginia State Police are investigating a 4-vehicle crash that killed a 66-year-old Suffolk man Monday in York County.

Authorities said troopers were called to the scene at the intersection of northbound Route 17 and Lakeside Drive at around 8:46 a.m.

Preliminary findings indicated a 2014 Hyundai Sonata was heading north on Route 17 when the vehicle stopped at a green light to let an emergency sheriff’s vehicle pass. It was then it was struck by a 2005 Harley Davidson ridden by Gordon Mark Buttles of Suffolk.

Buttles was ejected.

“During this time, the driver of a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, was able to stop behind Mr. Buttles, but was struck in the rear by a 2015 Ford F150,” wrote Michelle Anaya, spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police, in a news release. “The force of the impact, pushed the Elantra onto Mr. Buttles, pushing and pinning him under the Sonata.”

Buttles was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center where he later died, authorities said.
