NORFOLK — The Ghent area here has been missing a grocery store since Farm Fresh closed its doors.

But wait — an Aldi may soon fill that gap.

“While we don’t have an update to share on a potential Aldi store in Ghent, Norfolk, we are excited to confirm opening Aldi stores in Norfolk is the next phase of our Hampton Roads expansion plans,” said Chris Daniels, Aldi Petersburg Division vice president.

Aldi had filed for a conditional use permit through the city in December 2018 to allow for the sale of alcoholic beverages at the former location of the Farm Fresh.

On Jan. 24, the City Planning Commission voted 5-0 to allow for Aldi to sell alcoholic beverages for off-premise consumption at 730 West 21st St.

“We currently operate 15 stores in Hampton Roads, and we plan to open stores in Norfolk at the end of 2019 and 2020,” Daniels, said.

The store itself will be designed like all Aldi stores, with about 12,000 square feet of retail space and only four to five aisles.

This design makes Aldi stores much easier to navigate than big-box stores, Daniels said.

“Norfolk Aldi stores will also feature open ceilings, natural lighting, environmentally friendly building materials and plenty of refrigerator space for our robust selection of fresh produce, dairy and meat,” Daniels said.
