The Virginia Museum of Fine Art’s Artmobile is coming to the Stryker Center this weekend.
“I think it’s pretty exciting,” said Barry Trott, spokesman for the Williamsburg Regional Library, the entity in charge of hosting the Artmobile. “It really features artists who have some connection to Virginia.”
The Artmobile is a traveling art museum and has made stops throughout the state for the past 65 years. The Artmobile coming to Williamsburg is a newer model for the 21st century, which made its debut in October 2018, according to the Williamsburg Regional Library’s news release.
Trott said these interactive museums are becoming increasingly popular and feels it is a way to bring some artwork or a piece of the VMFA to residents.
“We know there are people in our community for whom travel is a challenge,” he said.
This year’s exhibit is “How Far Can Creativity Take You,” is about the history of the museum’s fellowship program and features art, videos, interactive exhibits and other displays.
Attendees can expect an introduction about the history of the museum as well as the fellowship program, a gallery featuring artwork from 12 artists with ties to Virginia and an interactive studio for “take-home” projects.
“As a statewide art museum we are charged not only with welcoming visitors to our Richmond campus, but also with bringing art and educational programs to all corners of the commonwealth,” said Alex Nyerges, director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. “VMFA on the Road allows us to significantly extend our reach so that every Virginian has access to authentic works of art and arts-based educational programming regardless of their location or economic status.”
The Artmobile will be outside the Stryker Center, 412 North Boundary St., on Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. It’s free and open to the public and is accessible to people who are disabled. For more information about the Artmobile, visit the museum’s website.
