VIRGINIA BEACH — The ViBe Creative District is in search of three young artists, ages 18-22, to complete three different temporary wall murals within the arts district this summer.

The artists are challenged to design a concept that includes the words “Building A Better Community, officials said.

Artists selected will work with and be mentored by local mural artist Victoria Weiss (also known as Butterpop Art) who has created murals in Virginia Beach’s ViBe District, Norfolk’s NEON District and who was also one of the 12 featured artist in the Something in the Water 2019 Art Walk.

Selected artists will tour Weiss’ Virginia Beach artwork at The Atlantic, Esoteric and Virginia MOCA, where Weiss’ SITW temporary mural remains.

The wall space for the project were repurposed from the Something in the Water event and relocated into the ViBe District for new mural artwork, officials said.

Officials said the mentorship opportunity is for young artists to learn from an experienced professional artist about: designing for calls for artwork, competitive bidding versus commissioned work opportunities, working outdoors in the elements, creating larger works in a short time frame and creating a sense of place through art.

The intent is to provide a paid learning opportunity as a resume and portfolio builder for the young artists, ViBe District officials said.

The ViBe Creative District nonprofit will pay each artist a $500 stipend and provide the paint & materials to complete the project.

Exact location of murals will be shared with selected artists after submissions are reviewed and artists selected.

Design concepts should be scaled to fit an eight-foot tall by 12-foot wide wall with landscape orientation.
