VIRGINIA BEACH — City officials announced on social media that beginning July 8, professionals with the Virginia Beach History Museums will be collecting items on a regular basis from the temporary memorial for the mass shooting victims.
Those individuals are trained in the care and preservation of museum objects and will collect the items to ensure the long-term preservation of the contents, officials said.
Staff will collect both general memorial items and those associated with each victim.
Memorial items will be carefully documented and made available to the victims’ families or stored for potential future uses.
“At this time, we are concentrating on healing and collecting from the memorial. The city will begin to explore options for a permanent monument or memorial in the coming weeks,” officials said.
VBHM staff will not collect:
- Flowers, real or artificial (except customized)
- Vases, baskets, etc.
- Food
- Lawn ornaments—pinwheels etc.
- Balloons
- Wet or moldy items (unless customized/exceptional)
