VIRGINIA BEACH — You might want to grab an umbrella if you’re planning on heading out to watch fireworks or to any Independence Day events this weekend.
National Weather Service Wakefield meteorologist Ryan Rogers is forecasting a warm weekend with a 40 to 50 percent chance of evening showers and storms through Sunday.
“It really starts to ramp up for Thursday, certainly Friday, and for Saturday and Sunday as well,” he said.
Rogers noted the potential for storms come fireworks time is there, but it’s difficult to say when exactly those storms might hit.
“What’s happening is we have a ridge of pressure that’s going to be stationed over the central Gulf Coast and the flow around that high pressure will bring down a series of hard-to-time disturbances across the area,” he said.
Typically, a 40 to 50 percent chance of storms doesn’t seem significant, Rogers said, but with high pressures during the summer months, those probabilities “are a pretty good indication there’ll be storms.”
Rogers said Wednesday will be the hottest day compared to the rest of the week with an evening sea breeze lowering temperatures but increasing humidity.
“I’m seeing a pretty good signal for a wetter period than we’ve had in the last week or so,” Rogers said.
