NORFOLK — The city’s Department of Public Works has selected Rubicon Global to deploy a “smart city” pilot program that will improve trash collection services, officials said in a news release.

Starting in July, the Department of Public Works’ Waste Management Division will use the RUBICONSmartCity platform over a six-month period to improve service delivery for the more than 61,000 locations the department serves every week, officials said.

With more than 60 waste vehicles running more than 90 routes per week, the integration of Rubicon’s technology will greatly improve operations during Waste Management’s peak season summer months.

The technology features real-time service confirmations, GPS vehicle tracking, and documentation of any driver issues, or the inability to successfully complete a trash pick-up.

Additional technology in 11 Norfolk supervisor vehicles will collect all the data and analytics and provide Public Works leadership with real-time route updates, daily reporting, and operational insights, officials noted.

“We are very excited to begin working with Rubicon Global to implement their smart city solution across our fleet of vehicles, and enhancing the quality of service we provide to our residents,” said Richard Broad, the city’s director of Public Works. “The city of Norfolk is committed to implementing sustainable practices that help the environment and improve our city processes.”

Rubicon Global is a technology company that powers a digital marketplace, provides a suite of Software as a Service products for waste, recycling, and smart city solutions, and collects and analyzes data for businesses and governments worldwide.

Norfolk is the first city in Hampton Roads to partner with RUBICONSmartCity, as a sustainability and customer service initiative, according to city officials.
