Hampton University recently announced the Virginia Beach Endowed Scholarship: Educational Fund for Families of the Municipal Center Tragedy.

On May 31, a longtime city employee gunned down 12 people at Building 2 of the Virginia Beach Municipal Center.

In the days following the shooting, multiple localities across Hampton Roads and the state have shown their solidarity with the city from wearing blue and hosting vigils to leaving flowers and other mementos at the municipal center and donating to charities.

“Hampton University calls the entire Hampton Roads region our home,” said Harvey, president of the university. “Our hope is that others will join us in making a positive difference in the life of a child affected by this tragedy and invest in that child’s future by donating to this scholarship.”

The earnings of the university’s endowment will go toward a scholarship for a dependent of a shooting victim who chooses to attend Hampton University and the initial scholarship will be $10,000 per year for four years, according to the university’s announcement.

In addition, the scholarship amount will be determined by the interest that the endowment will produce.

It is not clear if the university is contributing to the scholarship, how much money is raised so far and if the scholarship has an expiration date.

Those interested in donating to the scholarship can send contributions to Evelyn Graham, interim vice president for development, at 200 William R. Harvey Way, Hampton University, VA 23668.

Donations can be sent online by selecting “Endowed Scholarships” and in the comment section, specifying the ‘Virginia Beach Endowed Scholarship: Educational Fund for the Families of the Municipal Center Tragedy’.

For more information, visit the university’s donation page.
