Here’s how this local organization is helping make sure no child goes hungry this summer

NORFOLK — The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore announced their annual partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program.

Through that program, the foodbank will provide meals — at no cost — to up to 1,000 children participating in summer programs and camps across Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore, officials said in a news release.

There are more than 93,000 children in the foodbank’s service area eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunch — the beginning of summer break indicates the end of access to nutritious meals for many students, officials said.

“The summer months are especially challenging for families facing food insecurity in our community,” said Ruth Jones Nichols, CEO of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and The Eastern Shore. “Our partnership with the USDA is an integral part of our mission to ensure that children have access to nutritious food year-round. This program allows us to fill in the gaps for students who receive free or reduced meals when school is in session.”

Meals will be provided, at a first come, first serve basis, at the sites and times as follows:
