Virginia Beach extends property and real estate tax bills due dates

The May 31 mass shooting at the city’s Municipal Center led to the closure of offices there Monday.

Virginia Beach city employee DeWayne Craddock used two semi-automatic handguns, a silencer and extended ammunition magazines on Friday to kill 12 people, all but one them colleagues he had worked with for years. Craddock was mortally wounded in an intense gunbattle with police.

In light of that tragic incident and its aftermath, the Treasurer’s Office has extended the deadline for personal property and real estate tax payments normally due on June 5.

Officials said one-time payments will be considered on-time if paid by June 19. Online payment options and drop boxes at each of the Treasurer’s Office locations are available for use 24/7.

The Commissioner of the Revenue’s drive-thru personal property tax appeal at the Princess Anne Athletic Complex will be available through June 11.

It’s open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Follow the signs to the Landstown Road entrance at the Princess Anne Athletic Complex, 4001 Dam Neck Road.

If residents have already paid their personal property bill, they may still appeal and will be refunded any monies should the assessment be lowered, city officials said.

Please Note: For safety reasons, the Commissioner of the Revenue’s drive-thru appeals tent will close during extreme weather conditions and will not conduct normal business activity until favorable weather returns.

Directions to the tent can be viewed on this map.
