NORFOLK — Ordering merchandise online is the norm and has restructured the way people shop.
Getting a package delivered to your door feels like Christmas morning–until “porch pirates.”
“Any packages left unattended can be a target for thieves,” said Daniel Hudson, a public information officer for the Norfolk Police Department.
Norfolk is the first in the state to join the “Neighbors” app by camera doorbell company, Ring.
The app allows residents to anonymously post and follow crime-related information, photos, and videos for other neighbors to see.

Police said there are few ways to prevent pirates from invading your porch.
Tracking your package and making sure someone is home to receive it is ideal, but “a visible surveillance camera, even a fake one, and a company sign near the front door will often deter a thief,” Hudson said.
Customers can also require a signature for delivery, or if it’s easier, have packages delivered to their place of work.
Online retailers have also taken steps to prevent package theft by offering options like delivery lockers and “in-store pick-up.”
Police also said residents should be on the lookout for anyone suspicious watching a house or following a delivery truck and always report the theft to local law enforcement.
“Call 757-441-5610 and provide as much detail as possible like a vehicle description, license plate number, individual description, or last direction of travel,” authorities said.
