Retired Virginia Beach fire captain withdraws from school board appointment after racist, sexist FB posts surfaced

VIRGINIA BEACH — A retired fire captain here has withdrawn his name just hours after being appointed to the city’s School Board after sexist and racist Facebook posts surfaced overnight Tuesday.

Michael Mullins was appointed to represent the Rose Hall District following a unanimous vote Tuesday night. The School Board said Wednesday there will be a special session at 4:30 p.m. to appoint a replacement for Mullins.

Board members also issued a statement:

“Mr. Michael Mullins has withdrawn his name from the selection process for the vacant Rose Hall seat on the School Board of the City of Virginia Beach.

Social media posts that Mullins made in 2015 were disrespectful and offensive and do not align with our values as a school system.

The School Board accepts his withdrawal and plans to vote on its second-choice candidate during a special session this afternoon at 4:30.”
