VIRGINIA BEACH — April was anything but “the usual” in the city — the highlight, perhaps is the Pharrell Williams-backed Something in the Water.

The Convention Center hosted some of that festival’s events — not only was the building and surrounding areas home base for initial ticketing and shuttles to the concerts and activations, it was also where many educational, inspirational and other SITW activities took place.

Something in the Water is expected to come back next year, but for now here’s a list of events in May at the Convention Center:

  • May 4 – 5: 2019 U.S. Finals – Cheer and Dance Competition –  Beginning early Saturday and running thorough late Sunday, teams from up and down the East Coast and throughout the mid-Atlantic region will compete in a variety of divisions for trophies and titles. This is a spectator ticketed event; toddlers ages 4 and younger are free. Ticket info found here.
  • May 18 – 19: 2019 Tidewater Comicon – Tidewater Comicon is the brainchild of founder Mike Federali, who wanted to have a local comic book convention so badly he sold his entire comic book collection to make the first show possible. Held for one day at a hotel, that first show drew an over-capacity crowd. Fans gathered, met creators, had a blast, and left with only one complaint — “more space.” Tidewater Comicon shows draw more than 23,000 fans. Children 10 and younger get in free.  Passes and photo op tickets can be purchased here.
  • May 30: Virginia Symphony Afternoon Encore –  Join the musicians of the Virginia Symphony on a musical tour through the years with romantic strings, rousing marches, and toe-tapping favorites. Accommodations for wheelchairs, scooters and other assistive devices will be available. The concert begins at 2 p.m. and will run approximately an hour and 15 minutes. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Click here for more information.
