VIRGINIA BEACH – A former security assistant at Salem Middle School has admitted to having sex with a 14-year-old student.
Rapheal Dekendrick Shields, 24, pleaded guilty Tuesday to carnal knowledge of a minor, using electronic devices to facilitate crimes involving minors and possessing marijuana with the intent to distribute it.
He was sentenced to four years in prison, according to the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors said the charges carry a possible maximum sentence of 25 years in prison, but the state sentencing guidelines had suggested Shields serve no more than three months in jail so the four years he got was “well above the high end of the Virginia Sentencing Guidelines’ recommendation…”
Shields was also ordered to register as a sex offender. He will be on probation for 16 years following his prison term and is required to “complete any counseling or treatment as deemed by his probation officer.”
He was also ordered not to have any contact with the victim or the victim’s family.
Shields resigned shortly after being charged.
According to court documents that accompanied the plea deal, Shields on Nov. 24, was communicating with the 14-year-old middle school student.
He asked the student to “sneak out” of her home and get into his car around 2:30 a.m. that day.
Prosecutors said Shields drove the student to his home where they had sex. Also, during an interview with police, Shields admitted to selling marijuana out of his home.
