VIRGINIA BEACH — Animal Control officials are looking for the owner of an “exotic cat,” asking that owner to immediately contact authorities.

Around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, Animal Control officers fielded a call about an exotic cat sighting near the 2300 Block of Shore Drive.

Officers searched the area, found cat tracks, but no cat.

The cat is believed to weigh about 25 pounds and has long legs, making it about 25 inches tall at the shoulders, authorities said.

“Because the cat did have a collar on with two boxes (possibly electric fencing or tracking), Animal Control believes the cat has an owner and is asking the owner to contact the office at 385-6581,” officials wrote in a news release.

If the cat is domesticated, Animal Control officials said it may be social with humans, but authorities strongly suggest people to not approach or interact with the animal.

Instead, call Animal Control dispatchers at 757-385-5000 and report the sighting.

“This type of cat is known to eat small rodents such as mice and squirrels as well as small birds,” authorities said.
