Asifa Quraishi-Landes a law professor from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will present two lectures about Sharia Law for American Muslims and Islamic Family Law in U.S. Courts.
The first lecture is April 4.
Quraishi-Landes is president of the National Association of Muslim Lawyers and was recently named William & Mary’s 2019 Kraemer Middle East Distinguished Scholar In-Residence.
The Reves Center for International Studies and the Center for Comparative Legal Studies and Post-Conflict Peacebuilding are sponsoring the two events, which are free and open to the public.
Quraishi-Landes’ primary focus is in comparative Islamic and U.S. constitutional law and modern Islamic constitutional theory, according to a news release. She has received a doctorate degree from Harvard Law School and other degrees from Columbia Law School and the University of California Davis and Berkeley campuses.
She is currently working on a book titled “Islamic Reconstituitionalism.”
Other past accomplishments of Quraishi-Landes include:
- Law clerk in the U.S. State Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
- Public Delegate on the U.S. Delegation to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.
- Task Force on Religion and the Making of U.S. Foreign Policy for the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.
- Adviser to the Pew Task Force on Religion & Public Life.
- President/board member of Karamah: Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights.
- Fellow with the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding.
- Opinion Leaders Network for the British Council’s Our Shared Future Project.
It is unclear how much the university paid Quraishi-Landes for the events — Kate Hoving, public relations for the Reves Center for International Studies was unavailable for comment.
Representatives from the university’s Muslim Law Students Association were unavailable for comment.
