It’s starting to warm up so you might want to hit the trails. Here’s something to get you going

NORFOLK — The Elizabeth River Trail will be part of the seventh annual opening day for trails sponsored by Rails to Trails Conservancy.

The event will be on April 13.

People across the nation will be hitting the trails to kick off the spring season and the ERT has its own set of opening day events to attend.

RTC is a nonprofit dedicated to creating a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors to build healthier places for healthier people, according to its website.

The ERT is a 9-mile trail which runs from Norfolk State University following the Elizabeth River northward to Terminal Boulevard.

The trail serves as both a walking and biking trail.

On April 13 the city’s Recreation, Parks and Open Space will partner with the ERT to offer a challenge course from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Residents are encouraged to walk, run or bike on the ERT to the activities below:

  • Race through an outdoor obstacle course at Jeff Robertson Park, 1220 Azalea Court.
  • Get a free tennis lesson or dance in a zumba class at Fergus Reid Tennis Courts, 915 Orapax Avenue.
