Crash in Gloucester County leaves Newport News man dead, state police say

A Newport News man is dead following a single vehicle crash off Route 14 Monday afternoon, authorities said.

At approximately 2:35 p.m. Jiree Dequayne Burrell, 24 of Gloucester, was driving east on Route 14 when he lost control of a 1998 Ford Explorer, police said. The vehicle ran off the road causing the car to flip multiple times, ejecting the passenger from the vehicle, who was not wearing his seatbelt, police said.

The passenger, Tremayne Ryeshawn Safewright, 26, of Newport News, was flown to Riverside Regional Medical Center and was pronounced dead, police said.

Burrell also suffered serious injuries. Speed and alcohol were contributing factors to the crash, authorities said.

As the investigation continues into the crash, the Virginia State Police is asking for those motorists who stopped out at the crash scene to contact the investigating officer. Trooper James Street can be reached at 804-832-6368.

Authorities said charges are pending.
