Update 4:53 p.m.: James City County Police are releasing very few details about an incident Friday when two “explosive devices” were found inside a vehicle’s trunk in the Mirror Lakes subdivision.
For one, authorities declined to specify what kind of “explosive devices” were found.
The “original threat” was reported to police around 10 a.m., but authorities sent a notice of the suspected devices to the public at 1:43 p.m., said Al Catlett, battalion chief for the James City County Fire Department.
At 4:16 p.m., authorities sent an update: The Bomb Disposal Unit from the Newport News Fire Department has disarmed both of the devices without incident — James City County does not have a Bomb Disposal Unit, Catlett said.
Authorities said one person has been detained – they declined to identify that person, citing pending charges and an “ongoing investigation.”
Catlett’s said he’s also not sure whether the person – he declined to say whether the person is a man or a woman – was arrested or just being questioned.
Authorities would only say the person is “the occupant of the residence,” but did not specify which “residence.”
“What we put out there is all I have,” Catlett said in reference to the news release update.
Emergency personnel have cleared the scene after 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Original story: James City County firefighters and a Newport News bomb disposal team are on the scene of a “possible explosive device” in a county neighborhood.
James City County Police and Fire sent out a news release around 1:45 p.m. Friday saying authorities were responding to the Mirror Lakes subdivision for a report of a possible explosive device in a vehicle.
At the time of the news release, the fire department said the Bomb Disposal unit from Newport News was preparing to “disarm” the device if necessary.
The fire department said the area around the vehicle was cordoned off, and there was no threat to surrounding people or houses.
The James City County Fire Marshal’s office is investigating.
Officials with James City County Police and Newport News Fire were not immediately available for more information.
James City County Fire spokesman Al Catlett said he didn’t have any information to add beyond what had already been released because the incident was still under investigation and “evolving.”
