A Yorktown man died just five days after he drove his car into a ditch in Newport News, police said.
At approximately 3:50 p.m. on March 15, officers found a 2003 Buick Century at 12700 McManus Blvd in a ditch, police said. The driver, Waverly Daughtery, 78, from Yorktown, tried to avoid a vehicle stopped on the road, authorities said.
Daughtery was taken to a hospital with “non-life threatening injuries” and an investigation found no evidence of alcohol or reckless driving, authorities said.
On March 20, Daughtery died from his injuries and the police department’s crash team is now investigating, police said.
It remains unclear why his injuries were considered non-life threatening following the crash — follow up inquires to Brandon Maynard, spokesman for the police department, went unanswered Thursday morning.
