NORFOLK — The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore received a $160,000 grant from Tyson Foods to buy a new refrigerated truck that will be used for the organization’s mobile pantry program on the eastern shore.
“We appreciate Tyson’s continued support of the foodbank, and their commitment to joining our efforts to help families and children facing food insecurity on the eastern shore,” said Ruth Jones Nichols, CEO, Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. “This donation will significantly help to improve our operational efficiencies — enabling us to provide healthy, nutritious meals to more families in the most rural pockets of our service area.”
The foodbank’s mobile pantry distributes approximately 1.61 million pounds of food each year to individuals unable to travel to a foodbank partner agency, officials wrote in a news release.
The money from Tyson for the truck will allow the foodbank to serve an additional 80,000 meals annually to those facing food insecurity on the eastern shore.
