VIRGINIA BEACH — The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts and the Office of Cultural Affairs announced its newest exhibition from artist Sandra Alderman, “Chasing Colour: Vibrant Works of Wax on Wood.”
The exhibit will run from March 19 through May 14 and there will be a free artist reception at the Sandler Center on March 27 from 6-8 p.m.
Alderman’s exhibit takes viewers on a journey where wax and wood meet and colors collide in unexpected ways as this ancient art of encaustic painting is pushed to new boundaries, according to a news release from the city.
Encaustic art has a history dating back from ancient Egypt around 100 – 300 AD, widely known in the painting of the Fayum mummy portraits.
The word encaustic originates from the Greek word, enkaustikos, which means to burn in.
It’s the process of using molten beeswax, resin and pigment with a torch to fuse on a hardwood substrate.
Known for her extensive use of texture and her exploratory nature, Alderman shows with complete abandon the diversity of this complex and exciting medium.
As an award-winning artist in encaustic and mixed media, Alderman is constantly forging toward new directions in her work, according to the city.
The exhibit will be on view in the second- and third-floor lobbies from March 19 through May 14 during the Sandler Center’s normal operating hours: Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or during any performance at the Sandler Center, 201 Market St.
