American Evolution 2019 Commemoration a is a statewide organization which hosts different events and programs commemorating 1619.
“Our goal was to get schools across the commonwealth to sign,” said Yuri Milligan, associate director, marketing and communications for American Evolution based in Williamsburg.
While there is no financial incentive to participate in the program, all public and private schools are encouraged to enroll on an ongoing basis until December, she said.
The next big statewide event is 2019 Schools Spirit Week which is April 8-12.
“The educators can join 2019 Schools Spirit Week Challenge by sharing #2019Schools spirit on social media with daily reflection challenges that relate to the #2019Schools themes of democracy, diversity, and innovation,” Milligan said. “There will be daily prompts on with questions about how students will change Virginia and how has their communities shaped them.”
