NORFOLK — The city, Virginia’s Public Art Program and the Elizabeth River Trail Foundation seek an artist or team of artists to design, fabricate and install an artwork for the Elizabeth River Trail in Larchmont.
The Elizabeth River Trail is an urban bike and pedestrian trail that runs along the waterfront from the Port of Virginia, through downtown Norfolk and east toward Virginia Beach, according to the foundation’s website.
The Larchmont portion of the Elizabeth River Trail is a transitional gateway; heavily used by neighboring residents for exercise and as a gathering spot, it’s an entry point for the trail and features a parking area.
The foundation is seeking artwork that’s “refreshing, welcoming, inclusive, and contemplative,” according to a news release from the city’s Public Art Manager Karen Rudd.
“The proximity of the community library full of literary treasures could inspire a naturalistic, humanistic or romantic theme,” according to the news release.
The artwork could be placed anywhere along the trailhead running from the Lafayette River, to Hampton Boulevard, to the area behind the Larchmont Library.
There are 13 like-new, concrete bases left from a previous public art project that can be used, according to the news release. Artists have the option of placing 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional artwork on the bases to “create a sense of movement, a journey or story-telling.”
There is a $50,000 budget for artwork design, fabrication and installation. The deadline to submit a proposal is 2 p.m. on April 18.
Artists can submit a proposal online, or deliver it to City Hall, Suite 303. Artists are highly encouraged to apply online, according to the news release. There is no application fee to apply or use the online application system.
