VIRGINIA BEACH – Police here are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of an inmate at the Virginia Beach Jail Monday.
Sheriff’s officials identified the inmate as Oscar Geovani Lopez-Parades, 38, of Virginia Beach.
Lopez-Parades was booked into the Virginia Beach Jail on Feb. 12 to serve a 60-day sentence on a misdemeanor charge of driving on a revoked or suspended license (three or more offenses within 10 years), according to jail records.
Jail officials said sheriff’s deputies called Lopez-Parades for a medical check around 2 p.m. Monday.
“They discovered him unconscious in his cell and immediately initiated emergency medical treatment, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and requested medical response,” said Kathy Hieatt, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, in a news release. “Despite receiving on-site treatment by the jail’s medical provider, the Virginia Beach Fire Department and Virginia Beach Emergency Medical Services, Mr. Lopez-Parades was declared deceased at approximately 2:45 p.m.
Hieatt said Lopez-Parades “received a comprehensive medical screening” and was given treatment and medication for chronic, pre-existing medical conditions.
Officials did not disclose what those medical conditions were, citing HIPAA rules.
“As with all in-custody deaths, the incident is being investigated by the Virginia Beach Police Department and Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office Professional Standards Office. As required, the death will also be reported to the Virginia Department of Corrections,” Hieatt said. “No foul play is suspected.”
The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Norfolk.
