Williamsburg has a new BBQ place

Before moving to the states, Matt Yikilmaz was a bank manager in Turkey.

Thirty-five years later, he now runs Red Pig BBQ & Brew with his son, Berkan.

The business opened a couple weeks ago and serves everything from pulled pork and brisket to pizza and tiramisu. All the food items on the menu are homemade, including the bread for the rolls.

The father-son pair run the entire restaurant which includes food prep, cooking and, of course, interacting with customers.

“He doesn’t want to be with the customers, he wants to cook,” said Matt, 50. “He loves it.”

The pair leased the building from their friend, Reggie Akdogan, owner of Precious Gem jewelry store, who came up with the idea.

“Barbecue is the hottest item,” said Akdogan, who cooks as a hobby.

“I love the experimental–I’m pretty good at it too,” he added. “It’s like therapy to me.”

In addition to being the restaurant’s landlord, Akdogan is a consultant and gives Matt and Berkan, tips such as making the food fresh daily and leaving comment cards to get feedback from their customers, something Akdogan said is important in the restaurant business.

“It has to be high quality, it has to be real nice, it has to be organized and it has to be quick,” he said in regards to food service. “There is no short cutting in success.”

The restaurant is equipped with dozens of tables, a bar with a table top chairs and an outdoor seating area. In the back of the building adjacent to the parking lot there’s a Texas barbecue smoker on wheels.

Matt plans to bring live music and entertainment in the summer and once fall rolls around, he will add a sit-down menu.

But for now, customers can use the menu above the counter to order food while the pair is waiting on their liquor license to come in and prepares for the restaurant’s grand opening on March 15.

Red Pig BBQ, 1784 Jamestown Road is open Monday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, visit their website or call 757-790-2443.

The restaurant is currently looking for cashiers. Interested? Contact Matt at 757-561-1309.
